FarmLink - A Classroom in the Countryside
Education plays a huge part in Alvis Family farming activities. Beginning with informal visits by local schools and youth groups in the 1980’s Alvis joined forces with a number of other local farmers and supportive bodies to launch FarmLink.
Our sole intention is to inform school children about farming, food, countryside and environmental issues. The BBC Radio 4 awarded the Alvis family ‘Best Farm Communicator of the Year’ for this innovative collaboration.
FarmLink will have direct contact with more than 18,000 school children this year and have welcomed Coombe Farm and Yeo Valley Farm into the team. As numbers have increased for this completely free service FarmLink is run a limited company with charitable status. Many lessons linked to the National Curriculum can be delivered on the farm in an exciting way. We want children to understand the whole food chain so facilities are being developed at Alvis’ Lower Stock Farm for pupils to grow their own fruit and vegetables, then prepare and cook them in a purpose-built kitchen classroom. |
